Introduction
In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Human and Social Capabilities research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, three-quarters of which are donor-funded.
The Human and Social Capabilities division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, well-being and promote a socially just and cohesive society.

The Human and Social Capabilities seeks to appoint a qualified fieldwork supervisor for a study on Gender-Based Violence Survey and COVID-19. The aim of the study is to estimate the prevalence of gender-based violence. The study will be conducted in all the provinces in South Africa. The successful candidate will participate in the implementation of the survey and more specifically, overseeing and managing the day-to-day implementation of the survey in the selected study districts. Supervisors will also be expected to provide operational support and ensuring the success of the survey working under the supervision of the Project Managers and Project Directors.

Supervise and lead a team of field workers in one district
Overseeing the overall functions of fieldworkers
Assist fieldworkers when challenges are faced in the field
Assist with all data collection activities and recruitment of research participants
Ensure full understanding of the Human Sciences Research Council processes and project processes
Ensure quality work by following processes, procedures, and steps outlined in the project manual and during training
Adhere to ethical conduct at all times in the field and in the Human Sciences Research Council office
Ensure that data collectors secure informed consent from participants
Conduct ad-hoc quality checks of field work
Ensure that all data collected in the field is stored safely
Record expenses, claims and any other items that will need to be paid out by the Human Sciences Research Council for future reference
Maintain documentation and record of field activities; and prepare field reports
Hold weekly field team meetings and report back to Project Managers
Participate actively in review meetings and feedback discussions
Management of assets provided by the Human Sciences Research Council
Carry out any other activities deemed necessary for the success of the project.


Requirements
Must have worked in a managerial, coordinating or supervising role during any of his/her previous employment with at least 2 years’ experience in a research environment;
A valid unendorsed driver’s license; and must be a competent driver who has actively driven a car in the past three months;
Must be able to compile reports (both narrative and numerical);
Able to lead a teams for effective performance ability to organize and direct field activities;
Minimum Grade 12 (matric) qualification and a post matric qualification will be advantageous;
Willingness to travel long distances within a province, and at short notice;
Willingness to work accurately, independently and in a team;
Good interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills;
Be committed and apply self-discipline to completing one’s tasks as required;
Ability to work under pressure and adhere to set standards of the project;
Experienced or exposed in the NGO sector;
Must work with high integrity and enforce all HSRC policies and procedures in day to day management of teams and HSRC assets;
Previous working experience supervising data collection in national surveys a requirement;
Sensitized to, and an understanding of Gender-Based Violence;
Be willing to undergo a psychometric/competency test where required.
